私の本職は弁護士です。現在日本でフルタイムで働けるポジションを求職中です。
I live with my husband. He works here. My occupation is Attorney, Lawyer. Right now I’m looking for a full time position.

日本人の生徒さんが直面している共通の問題点は何でしょうか？
Q: In your opinion, what is the common problem that Japanese students are facing.

一番大きな問題は英語を話すことだと思います。日本人は語彙においても文法においても素晴らしい基礎を持っています。書くこともかなりのレベルです。でも、会話となると問題です。学校でネイティブスピーカーに英語を学んだ経験が不足しているのが理由ですね。
I think that the largest problem is of course speaking English. They have a great base in vocabulary and a great base in grammar. So their writing are quite good. But when they come to speaking, because there are such a shortage of practice that they can have at school with the native speaker, that’s really the problem area.

先生のレッスンは、生徒さんに合わせて、カスタマイズされているのですか？
Q: Have you customized your lesson suites to students needs?

もちろんです。ある生徒さんは会話に集中したいとのことですので、日常生活やお仕事について話しをしています。また他の生徒さんは興味のある記事を読んでみたいとのことでしたので、新聞から記事を選んで、それについて議論しています。『ハリーポッター』を読みたいという生徒さんもいらっしゃいました。
Oh, sure. Some students want to just focus on speaking. So we talk about their life and their work experience. The other students want to read the article on mind and then discuss. So they can pick an article from newspaper, and we discuss that. I had one student who wanted to read Harry Potter. So we did that.

ある生徒さんは、仕事でたくさんの英文レターを取扱う必要があるため、時々レッスンで彼女が書いた文章をチェックしています。また、お客さんが使ったおかしなフレーズについて、学んだりしています。
And one student, she works in environment for just a lot of letters in English. So sometimes she all write it and I check it for her during the lesson. And she has clients uses strange phrases. So she always asks me “How do you use that phrase? What does it mean? What context to use it?”

それは、本当におかしなフレーズなのですか？それとも日本人にとって馴染みが無いだけなのでしょうか？
Q: Is that real strange or just strange for Japanese?

日本人にとって馴染みのない表現です。アメリカの口語表現なのです。彼女の英語力は非常に高く、関心しています。これは多くの日本人に共通することなのですが、話す英語にしては表現が丁寧すぎるのです。アメリカ人に丁寧すぎる言葉を使うと、コミュニケーションが上手くいかないことがあるでしょう。気持ちが通じ合えないのです。
Just strange for Japanese, it’s very colloquial American. Her English level is pretty good. I am very impressed. I think one of the things that all Japanese often have it, it is too polite when she speaks in English. I think, for Americans, when you are so polite, it’s a little you feel uncomfortable. You can’t get close.

どうして日本人の英語は丁寧すぎるのでしょうか？
Q: Why does it happen? Why is it so polite?

それは、学問として英語を熱心に学んできたからだと思います。さらに、彼女の場合は日常の雑多な事柄を英語で話す機会があまりなかった。だから、文章を書くように話してしまう。そして、その英語が非常に高いレベルの英語なのです。
Because I think it is very academic. And she didn’t have much opportunity to speak just everyday things. She talks like she writes, which is very high level English.

その生徒さんにはどのようなアドバイスをされているのですか？
Q: What is your suggestion to her?

そうですね。毎回、ニュースや最近の出来事について話しをして、会話の練習をしています。また、映画を観るように勧めています。特にコメディ映画ではとてもくだけた表現を使っていますので。
Well, we always discuss news and just current events. So I think just practicing conversation. And I always say just watch movies, because in movies they speak so casually especially in comedies.

仕事の場面で砕けた英語を誤って使ってしまうことが心配なのですが
Q: What I am afraid is sometimes I may use casual English for business situations.

アメリカ人に対しては問題ないのではと思います。もちろんビジネスレベルの英語は良いと思いますが、例えばあなたが外国人の場合であれば、砕けすぎた表現を使ってしまったとしても受け入れてくれるでしょう。また、仕事の会議ではどんな英語をつかって、友達と話すときはどんな表現が使えるのか、その違いを映画では知ることもできます。
I think with American it’s OK. You can get away of it. American appreciates the business level English. But when you are foreigner, you have more leeway. And, because movies will show how you speak in business meetings, and how you can speak with your friends. And then it will show the differences.

最近の映画でお勧めはありますか？
Q: Do you have any recommendations of movies recently?

最新の映画ですと『ハングオーバー！消えた花ムコと史上最悪の二日酔い』です。4人の男性がラスベガスに独身旅行に行くのですが、とても愉快な映画です。他には、ウディー・アレン監督の新作『それでも恋するバルセロナ』。私はツタヤでレンタルして見ました。また、これはテレビドラマですが、『アントラージュ』が好きです。日本で話題になっていますか？
The most recent one is “THE HANGOVER”. It’s about 4 guys to go bachelor trip to Las Vegas. It’s really funny though. And the recent movies that I liked, the new Woody Allen film, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, it’s pretty good, interesting. I rented it in TUTAYA. And that’s for drama, I like “ENTOURAGE”. Is that popular in Japan?

どんなドラマですか？
Q: What’s kind of drama?

映画俳優が友人達と映画ビジネスを始めようとする、より男性向けの映画です。現在シーズン７まであります。ロサンゼルスが舞台で、実際のレストランで撮影しているので、今現地で何が流行っているのかが分かります。展開は速いですが面白いです。
It’s HBO drama about like a movie actor trying to make a movie business and with friends. It’s much more like guy drama. There are 7 seasons now, but I don’t know it’s popular in Japan. And it’s based on LA. They filmed at the actual restaurants. So you get in what’s popular in LA right now. And it’s very fast, but funny at the same time.

もう一つテレビ番組から。日本人は料理番組が大好きですね。『TOP CHEF』が面白いです。料理の対決番組で、現在シーズン７まであります。
Another TV show, I know Japanese really like cooking show. And there’s very good show called “TOP CHEF”, which is a cooking competition show. And there’s 7 seasons now.

映画がとてもお好きなんですね。
Q: You like movies very much.

はい。ビートたけしさんも大好きです。彼は” awesome”だと思います。
I really like movies. I love Beat Takeshi. I think he is awesome.

” awesome”とは、「驚き」という意味ですか？
Q: Does “awesome” means, “surprising”?

いいえ。単に「すごい」、「カッコイイ」という意味です。スラングはどんどん変化して行きますね。最近日本人の女の子たちが「gorgeous（ゴージャス）」という言葉を使いはじめていますね。同じ意味なのですがアメリカの女の子たちは、“oh, that’s fabulous（オー、イッツ・ファービュラス）”とか、単に“fab（ファブ）”って言うんです。
No, it just means great, cool. And the slang is constantly changing. Like for girls, right now, I know in Japan girls have started using “gorgeous” to say, “oh, that’s gorgeous”. And in America, girls say, “oh, that’s fabulous”, or “fab”.
